“Contemporary Art in Europe and America” examines the changes and development in the arts from 1945 to the early 21st century. Focusing on the main artistic movements and tendencies of the period (dominated by the European/American canon) the class will also consider extra-European examples and lesser-known trends.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to identify the various styles, media, and content for the visual arts of the period.
  2. Students will be able to situate works of art within the chronological framework and socio-political context of the second half of the 20th century and early 21st century.
  3. Students will be able to evaluate the cultural significance of artworks and to appreciate a variety of interpretations of works of art.
  4. Students will be able to organize and communicate (verbally and in writing) their own critical perception and analysis, using appropriate vocabulary.
  5. Students will enhance their intercultural understanding of languages, cultures, and histories of local societies and the global issues to which these relate. (CCI LO1)
  6. Students will engage with artistic or creative objects (e.g., visual art, theatrical works, film) in different media and from a range of cultural traditions. (CCI LO2)
  7. Students will think critically about cultural and social difference; they will identify and understand power structures that determine hierarchies and inequalities that can relate to race, ethnicity, gender, nationhood, religion, or class. (CCI LO3)
